This accessibility statement applies to the www.staveleytowncouncil.gov.uk website which is Staveley Town Council’s main communication tool.

This website is run by Staveley Town Council. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • zoom in up to 300% without the text spilling off the screen
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • you cannot modify the line height or spacing of text
  • most older PDF documents are not fully accessible to screen reader software
  • you cannot skip to the main content when using a screen reader
  • there’s a limit to how far you can magnify the maps

However, we do have an accessibility helper menu installed which allows you to:

  • Change the font to a readable style
  • Resize the font
  • Change the contrast and select a colour
  • Invert the colours
  • See images in greyscale
  • Highlight links

This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances and exemptions listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons.

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

Some images do not have a text alternative, so people using a screen reader cannot access the information. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (non-text content).

Text is not always used to convey information rather than images of text. This doesn’t meet success criterion 1.4.5 Images of Text (Level AA)

We plan to add text alternatives for all images by September 2025. When we publish new content we’ll make sure our use of images meets accessibility standards.

Disproportionate burden

Navigation and accessing information

It’s not possible for users to change text size without some of the content overlapping.  However the content can be magnified to 500% before this becomes an issue.

Content that’s not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

PDFs and other documents

Some of our PDFs and Word documents are essential to providing our services. For example, we have PDFs with information on how users can access our services, and forms published as Word documents. By 23 September 2024, we plan to either fix these or replace them with accessible HTML pages.

The accessibility regulations do not require us to fix PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018 if they’re not essential to providing our services. For example, we do not plan to fix copies of minutes and agendas or our annual governance and accountability returns.

Any new PDFs or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards.

Live video

We do not plan to add captions to live video streams because live video is exempt from meeting the accessibility regulations.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We continually monitor and test the accessibility of our site and have made fixing and improving the accessibility of the site part of our daily work.  We are grateful for any feedback to help us to do this.  Please let us know if you have had any problems accessing documents and areas of the website.

Use of Your Personal Data

The information you have provided to the council will be used by the council in adherence to its statutory obligations, including enforcement action if required. The consequence of not providing information to the council is that the council will be unable to process your enquiry, assessment or application.

Sharing of Personal Data

To comply with its statutory obligations, the council must make public certain details in the form of a public register. The personal information you provide will not be used for any other purpose unless required by law, to prevent or detect crime or to protect public funds.

Your unpublished personal data will be kept secure by the council and will be kept within the European Economic Union (EEU). Where the council uses a third party to store your personal data and it is stored outside of the UK/EEU, the council will ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to keep your personal data secure.

The council will keep your personal data indefinitely unless you explicitly request it to be removed. Details cannot be removed if this forms part of a statutory or legal obligation or public registry. Your responsibilities:
  • Only provide personal information pertinent to its intended use.
  • Tell us as soon as possible if any of the personal information you have provided should change.

Your Rights

You have several rights you may enforce. Where the council is processing your personal data due to the consent you have provided, you are entitled to withdraw this consent. You may also ask for such information to be deleted and where it cannot you may request to restrict processing (halt using further). In addition, subject to some legal exceptions, you have the right to: • request a copy of the personal information the council holds about you; • to have any inaccuracies corrected; • to have your personal data erased; • to place a restriction on the council’s processing of your data; • to object to processing; and • to request your data to be ported (data portability).
