Duckmanton

About

Duckmanton is a village in North East Derbyshire sitting between Bolsover and Chesterfield. It is recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 under the land of Ralph Fitzhubert. It is a long scattered village running North to South

Duckmanton grew in size in the 1880s with the development of Markham Colliery, followed by the connectivity brought by rail in the early 1900s. Duckmanton Junction (sometimes referred to as Duckmanton Junctions) is the collective name for four interrelated rail junctions now disused, which opened for goods traffic on 22 September 1907 and for passengers on 1 October 1907. 

Nearby is the Markham Vale Enterprise Park built on what was mainly the former Markham Colliery. The regeneration of Markham Vale brings employment and investment with  environmental landscaping, new planting and trails. There is also the creation of habitats for plants and wildlife.

The Walking Together Memorial Trail to commemorate the 106 miners who tragically lost their lives in 3 disasters at the Markham Colliery. 

Along the trail you will find collaborative work by Stephen Broadbent, a british sculptor specialising in public art, along with a community working group of volunteers reflecting the miner’s journey to the pit and back home again. You can find out more in the accessibility guide  for the trail

This page is currently open for continual updating to provide information to others about the area and it’s villages. It is an opportunity for local people to collaborate and give a guide to all activities and events. locations and enjoyable days and afternoons out.

You have several rights you may enforce. Where the council is processing your personal data due to the consent you have provided, you are entitled to withdraw this consent.
